One of my favorite things about the MLB All-Star cleats is the fact that it’s the only day that players wear colorways that they couldn’t wear otherwise. They’re able to disregard the “dominant cleat color” uniform rule and wear whatever they want, which means that we’ve seen a lot of white, grey, silver, and non-team colored cleats over the past few years. Even though I’ve always gravitated towards more conservative designs in baseball, I always look forward to seeing the bizarre colorways from the Midsummer Classic.
This year, there were so many All-Star PE’s that I actually had to split the ASG footwear into two posts (new releases post is here). The top PE’s appear below.

It’s not much of a surprise that Alex Rodriguez wore a white PE of his signature cleat — he’s worn white Shox cleats at the All-Star Game for the past few years. This PE featured embroidery on each cleat (the date on the shoe above, and “NEW YORK” on his other cleat), and additional views are available here and here.

Albert Pujols wore the most attractive white PE in the game — they’re pretty simple, but they’re my favorite model from last night. These featured a Nike Air Max MVP upper, a 5-Tool Zoom Air midsole, and a white MCS outsole. Unfortunately, not too many photos of these were out there tonight… this is the only other decent view I could find. If anyone has any better shots of these, please get in touch.

Derek Jeter has been wearing All-Star PE’s of his Jordan signature cleats for years now, and I’m glad he went with these last night — lighter colored cleats just don’t look right on his feet. This Jeter Clutch PE looks black / white in most photos, but the upper was actually navy. Additional views here, here, and here, and he wore a matching trainer before the game pictured here.

Probably the flashiest cleats from the game, Matt Holliday’s Air Max MVP PE’s are sure to get Paul Lukas‘ blood boiling. Featuring a white upper with pinstriped-purple accents, this pair is your prototypical All-Star cleat — great for one game, but completely hideous otherwise. Additional views here and here.

The other New York third baseman had Shox PE’s of his own… David Wright is seen here in his grey patent leather Shox Fuse PE’s. Additional views here and here.

Manny’s All-Star PE’s are actually a downgrade in flash from the 5-Tools that he’s worn for most of the season (which he started wearing around the All-Star break last year), but these Shox Fuse PE’s are still decent. An additional view is here (he started wearing these a few days before the ASG).

While you can’t make out all the details of these from game photos, Easton really did a great job with their Mojo PE’s for their All-Stars. Hanley Ramirez (above), Aramis Ramirez, Cristian Guzman, and Dustin Pedroia all wore similar pairs for the game, and they all feature a Yankee Stadium mural graphic, an “NYC 2008″ graphic on the heel, and some custom player elements as well. Check out the details here.

I couldn’t find shots of Pedroia or Guzman, but Aramis is seen in his Easton Mojo PE’s above (and Miguel Tejada is wearing Mizuno model, but I couldn’t tell if they were customized or not).

Ichiro wore a silver / black / navy colorway of his signature cleat. I’ve always loved the cleats that he’s worn, but I just wish they didn’t have such massive tongues… they make an otherwise sleek cleat look a little ridiculous.

Lance Berkman wore a grey / red PE of his usual Under Armour Bomber cleats… I’ve never been to fond of this design, but the All-Star treatment is nice.

George Sherrill came out of nowhere this year to not only make the AL All-Star team, but to get himself an adidas PE as well. adidas should’ve definitely hooked him up with some orange accents as well, but his silver / black pair of an upcoming adidas model appears above.

Dan Haren is shown above in a pair similar to the PE’s of Sherrill and Chase Utley (who wore the same pair that he had on in the Home Run Derby), but with the awkward looking medial toe on this colorway, this was one of the weaker PE’s from the game.

While some other Reebok cleats from the game left a lot to be desired, these Francisco Rodriguez PE’s (presumably based on the ‘09 Vero cleat) are pretty decent. The accents look great in these… at the very least, they’re an improvement over the Vero PE’s worn over the past few years (i.e. Giambi, Penny, Papelbon, etc.).

That does it for the PE debuts from last night’s game… Russell Martin, Adrian Gonzalez, and Brian Wilson all wore cleats that they’ve previously worn this season, but I’ll discuss those and others in MLB first-half recap posts over the next few weeks. I’ll also be doing some All-Star Photoshop renderings soon… Stay tuned.

Jason posted this comment on Jul 17 08 at 1:51 pmThe Jeter Clutch trainer was available at the Champs on Times Square. The white portions have blue pinstripes, similar to that Yankee version of LeBron’s shoe.
